EFI VUTEk FabriVU 340i made its debut at FESPA Berlin 2018, but it was officially launched during EFI’s annual Connect Conference (January 24, 2018).

I was able to see the FabriVU 340i, for the first time two weeks ago at FESPA Global Print Expo in Berlin, Germany.

EFI has designed the FabriVU 340i for direct-to-fabric printing, using disperse dye inks to print directly onto polyester and polyester blends.

What is the difference between EFI FabriVU 340i and FabriVU 340?

First of all, just by looking at both printers you can notice a significant difference in structure: the FabriVU 340i has a roll-to-roll with calender structure, while the FabriVu 340 has a dedicated roll-to-roll structure, no embedded calender at the front but has a sophisticated media winder at the front.

Here you can see the difference in structure for the EFI FabriVU 340i (left) and EFI FabriVU 340 (right). Illustration by Maria Renée Ayau, FLAAR Reports (These diagrams intend to illustrate the basic media path for wide-format textile printers for each type of structure, though not all brands use the same media path. Some printers may have additional or fewer tension, dancer or roller bars, or may have them in different positions; which makes the media path slightly different. Also, when a printer has an in-line calender or a jumbo roll option, this alters the media path before printing and wind-up).

This feature provides the FabriVU 340i printer an advantage over the 340, which is that you do not need additional equipment to fix the printed media, plus you save costs and space.

Speaking of which, another difference between these two printers; both identical in length (230 cms or 90 inches) and height (180 cms or 71 inches), is the difference in width: 615 cms o 242 inches for the 340i and 454 cms or 178 inches. Even though the FabriVU 340i is wider you won’t waste any extra space on an independent calender, so the printer’s foot is the only space you will need for production.

There are other differences among these models, such as the paper weight allowance: from 57 to 110 gr/sqm for the FabriVu 340i and from 28 to 140 gr/sqm for the FabriVU 340. Though it is curious that the fabric weight allowance is the same for both models (from 45 to 450 gr/sqm).

While on the subject of media handling, it is worth noting the supported media roll diameters are not the same: 35 cms or 13.75 inches for the EFI VUTEk 340i and 45 cms or 17.5 inches for the FabriVU 340.

Some other differences are in terms of productivity, the speed claims stated on the EFI website:

Based on this quick comparison, you can see the EFI VUTEk FabriVU 340i was designed as an improvement for the FabriVU 340 earlier model. We hope to continue seeing both of these printers at different trade shows around the world, so we can keep learning more about them.
