Orange peel could be the future bio-plastic in 3D printing industry

We’ve all heard of PLA or ABS infinite amount of times, when it comes to 3D printing materials. Almost every 3D printer can use both filaments. They offer different features but in the end, both produce good results. 3D printing industry is in its initial phase and is still improving, and new material discovery is part of its progression. You wouldn’t believe orange peel or even shrimp peel could be the next new material.

Studies from a group of students from the Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia (IaaC) in Spain revealed that orange peel could possibly be the future bio-plastic. They wanted to experiment with bio-plastics trying to reduce, reuse, and recycle. Since oranges are abundant in Spain, they decided to experiment with their peel, shrimp peel and coffee. As they explain in their study, orange peel contains cellulose, which is an important structural component of the primary cell walls of plants. These characteristics can offer a high molecular chain length, or degree of polymerization, a more crystalline material and ability to support higher temperatures.

This is still in a development stage; students from IaaC assure that it could be the future for 3D printing with eco-friendly materials. The use of these alternative materials requires more investigation and resistance tests; in order to introduce it into the market but the reality is that these materials have potential.
